In the middle of the Saint Croix River sits Saint Croix Island, where in 1604, Samuel de Champlain marked the first European settlement north of Florida. The National Parks Service operates the Saint Croix Island International Historic Site on the mainland where you can explore an accessible interpretive trail featuring bronze figures of the French and Passamaquoddy, as well as historical displays highlighting the interaction of the two cultures. Visits to the island are not encouraged due to its fragile nature. There is no charge to enter.
