Fort Raleigh National Historic Site has a reconstructed fort from the 1587s when a thriving community lived on Roanoke Island. By 1590 though they inexplicably disappeared, except for the word “croatoan” carved into a tree. The site collects the facts and explains the history.

While you are here, also stop at the Elizabethan Gardens which features exotic plants in this garden sanctuary.
