The Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge is an important resting place for migrating birds, particularly the Sandhill Crane. In spring, approximately 20,000 Sandhill Cranes stop here for 6 weeks to refuel. The valley celebrates with an annual Sandhill Crane Festival held the 2nd weekend in March, drawing birders, nature lovers, and photographers to this extraordinary sight.
