Just before Virginia seceded from the United States during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln asked Robert E. Lee, one of the greatest military minds in all the United States history, to lead the Army in the Civil War. Robert E. Lee did not immediately accept, but rather waited to see what his home state of Virginia would do. When it seceded, he became their army’s leader.
Here lies his home as it was during the Civil War. As space ran out of the existing cemeteries for war-time injuries, President Lincoln made the decision to make Arlington National Cemetery on his front doorstep as a reminder for Lee should he return to his home.
