The Vaughan-Smitherman Museum was built in 1847 as a school for orphans. Over the years, it has been a hospital, a county courthouse, and a military school. Today, among the museum exhibits are Civil War memorabilia, slave era documents, medical equipment, confederate money, and munitions salvaged from the Selma River.
